It occured to me that this article is currently about skill checks, not skills in general. Would it be a good idea to move this article to "Skill check", and write a new article here about what a Skill is? (I'm not suggesting more work for others; I'm willing to do what I can, but there are a bunch of links that would need to be reviewed.
