Shadow

From NWNWiki

Shadow portrait

Shadows are creatures of living darkness, hating life and light with equal fervor. Their touch leaves the chill of nonexistence, making them very dangerous opponents.

[edit] Special abilities

A shadow has damage reduction 5/+1, turn resistance +2, and the usual undead immunities to critical hits, death magic, disease, level drain, ability drain, mind-affecting spells, paralysis, poison, and sneak attack. Furthermore, these monsters are incorporeal (which implies 50% concealment).

The shadow's claws do 1 piercing-slashing damage (no die roll plus the strength modifier equals 0, but there is a minimum of 1 damage per hit) and drain a point of strength if the target fails a DC 11 fortitude saving throw. However, due to the presence of a special AI script (namely x2_ai_shadow), these claws are not normally used. Instead, the shadow will conduct a shadow attack every round. The advantages of the shadow attack are use of a touch attack (for a better chance to hit), no saving throw, a greater amount of strength loss (1 to 6 instead of 1), and the ability to kill if the target's strength would be reduced to 0 by the attack. The drawback of the shadow attack is that immunity to ability drain renders this attack harmless (there is no physical damage).

[edit] Notes

  • The shadows summoned by the summon shadow sub-spell, the summon undead (pale master) feat, and the death domain power differ from the standard creature in that they are not incorporeal and they lack shadow attacks. The ResRef of these summoned shadows is nw_s_shadow.
  • The shadow summoned by the summon shadow (shadowdancer) feat differs from the standard creature in that it has damage reduction 30/+1 and turn resistance +10. In addition, this shadow does not use its shadow attack, due to a bug in its template (specifically, a trailing space in the name of the local variable that specifies the special AI script). The ResRef of this summuned shadow is x1_s_shadow.
