The faction property of a creature will determine how it will react to player characters or to other creatures.

[edit] Standard Factions

  • There are four standard factions:
    • Hostile: This faction is used for all creatures that are intended to be enemies of all other factions (except of course other hostile creatures – they will not attack one another).
    • Commoner: This faction is used for all creatures that are intended to behave in a "cowardly" fashion.
    • Merchant: This faction is used for creatures that are basically neutral to the other factions, except towards hostile creatures.
    • Defender: This faction is used by Bioware for creatures that are intended to help creatures of other factions if they are attacked (like city guards or soldiers).
  • Every faction has settings that establish how it reacts to other factions (i.e. whether a faction is friendly, neutral or hostile vs. each other existing faction). These settings are called reputation points. It is important to note that reputation levels are not necessarily reciprocal. Faction A may be friendly towards Faction B and Faction B may act neutral towards Faction A.
  • Reputation points/levels and factions are customizable in the NWN toolset. The Faction Editor is available under the Tools Menu, or via the hotkey CTRL-ALT-F.

[edit] Reputation Points

  • 0-10: a setting between 0 and 10 reputational points indicates that the faction is hostile towards the faction named under the column. The faction selected in will therefore attack any member of the other faction on sight.
  • 11-89: a setting between 11 and 89 reputational points indicates that the faction selected is neutral towards the faction named under the column. The faction selected will therefore neither attack nor help the members of that other faction.
  • 90-100: a setting between 90 and 100 reputational points indicates that the faction selected is allied with the faction named under the column. The faction selected will therefore help the members of that other faction that are under attack.

[edit] Notes

  • Factions have a "Global Effect" property which, if enabled, causes actions taken by a creature against one member of the faction to affect their reputation with all other members of the faction. If this property is disabled, then only members of that faction that witness the act will be affected.
