Escaped from the Underdark: Archipelago (EfU:A) is a persistent world server set in a non-canonical chain of islands somewhere in the Shining Sea. The focal point of the server is the Ziggurat settlement on the Island of Ymph,
EfU is a low-level, low-magic roleplay server. Most of the player characters are victims of the mysterious Portal that has been teleporting people and creatures from all over the world, but they can also be shipwreck survivors, or settlers from the nearby city of Old Port. DM-interaction with PCs is frequent and there are plenty of special scripts and scripted quests in place, including a subrace system that supports drow, duergar, goblins, kobolds and other non-standard races.
The server also supports an ambient loot system, allowing area-appropriate drops that can be used to further one's chances of survival. Ex: Killing a wererat and finding on its corpse a charm capable of summoning rats to your aid. This system lends a great deal of depth and immersion to the server, and can greatly further role-play.
Recently, Escape from Underdark has evolved into Escaped from Underdark: Archipelago. While the Underdark is still explorable, most of the server is now on the surface.
