The confused mind-affecting effect takes control of the target creature, causing it to randomly choose one of the following three activities each round: wander aimlessly, stand still, or attack the nearest viable target.
In addition to the general ways to remove effects, greater restoration and the "mind protection" line of spells (clarity, lesser mind blank, and mind blank) will specifically target the confused effect.
