Description: The caster creates a black blade-shaped planar rift, resembling a greatsword which fights at her side. The blade cannot be harmed by physical attacks, but it can be affected by dispel magic or similar effects. For the purpose of bypassing damage reduction, the sword has an enhancement bonus equal to your intelligence bonus or your charisma bonus (for wizards and sorcerers respectively) to a maximum of +20. The spell requires the caster to concentrate on it — casting spells or performing any other action than walking or talking may result in a concentration failure and end the spell.

• The spell would give the black blade an enhancement bonus equal to the ability modifier of the caster, but the order of events in the script was incorrectly implemented causing the weapon to become unalterable before the enhancement could be applied.
• Requires Hordes of the Underdark.
• The black blade of disaster attacks twice per round as a self-propelled greatsword with an attack bonus of 28, doing 2d6 base slashing damage plus 1d12 piercing damage plus other bonuses.
• The enhancement bonus is +5, but there is a +15 attack bonus for overcoming damage reduction.
• The black blade of disaster does massive criticals at 1d12.
• The black blade of disaster's on-hit property opens a planar rift with a DC of 17, which destroys many targets with a single hit.
• The black blade of disaster is unaffected by any form of damage due to being marked plot.
• The black blade of disaster can only be dispelled by Mordenkainen's disjunction or dismissal. In particular, it is not affected by banishment, word of faith, or other breach or dispelling effects.
• The black blade of disaster has the following useful feats, amongst other more banal ones:
  • called shot
  • cleave
  • dodge
  • great cleave
  • improved critical (greatsword)
  • knockdown
  • mobility
  • power attack
  • weapon focus (greatsword)
  • weapon specialization (greatsword)
• The black blade of disaster has good ranks in both discipline and parry.

• Prior to version 1.69, the black blade of disaster erroneously had weapon focus in the longsword (instead of in the greatsword).
