Baldur's Gate was a game made by BioWare in conjunction with Black Isle Studios using the Infinity Engine and the second edition of the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. The story follows the adventures of a player character (named by the player) and up to five non-player character followers as the player character attempts to discover his/her origins. The game is set in the popular Forgotten Realms campaign setting and takes place over two huge games (Baldur's Gate and Shadows of Amn) and their add-on packs (Tales of the Sword Coast and Throne of Bhaal, respectively).

The games were a resounding success in the market and created a positively huge fanbase that is still going strong, despite the fact the games are now many years old, which tends to make games obsolete in many players' eyes. The games also spawned a pair of console spinoffs named Dark Alliance. These games have nothing to do with the plot of the PC games and were less well received than the others. Still, they sold well too, and the Baldur's Gate franchise has been profitable.

Rumors of a Baldur's Gate 3 were once a hot topic on the BioWare forums. Although BioWare had officially stated there would be no new games released using the Infinity Engine, they had not openly denied plans to design a Baldur's Gate 3. This topic was soundly laid to rest with the removal of the Dungeons & Dragons license from Atari.
